Star Wars: The Last Jedi also known as Star Wars Episode VIII, is the latest film directed by Rian Johnson (Looper, Brick) stars Daisy Ridley (Murder on the Orient Express), John Boyega (Attack on the Block), Mark Hamill (Batman: The Animated Series), Oscar Isaac (Drive) & Carrie Fisher (When Harry Met Sally) star in the latest installment in the sci-fi franchise that starts off so promising then crashes & burns faster than Paul Walker & his pal back in November of 2013. The basic synopsis of the latest Star Wars is that it picks off where “The Force Awakens” ended where Luke Skywalker's peaceful and solitary existence gets upended when he encounters Rey, a young woman who shows strong signs of the Force. Her desire to learn the ways of the Jedi forces Luke to make a decision that changes their lives forever. Meanwhile, Kylo Ren and General Hux lead the First Order in an all-out assault against Leia and the Resistance for supremacy of the galaxy. First off I’d like to start with some positives,
The good:
-Mark Hamill’s performance, as Luke Skywalker Mark gives the strongest performance of the entire movie where he is done with being a Jedi, he just wants to live on a tiny island in serenity.
- Visuals, the CGI looks great throughout the entire movie, Industrial Light & Magic (ILM) has done a tremendous job on making a visually stunning movie, easily the 2nd best cg in a movie next to Blade Runner 2049.
-The film goes through most cliches you see in the final film of a trilogy here & gets rid of them for the better.
Now there are minor things that i thought were good in the film but nothing worth mentioning, there were alot of poorly made decisions made throughout the film. Here are the film’s biggest problems,
The Bad:
-General Leia not dying, while in space the first order attacks her ship full of resistance members & when the ship blows up she is floating through space in slow-motion until she reaches one of the ships where she is nursed back to health.
-Luke Skywalker dying like a character in a Japanese cartoon, here we have Luke, deflecting so many rounds from an AT-A6 when it seems he has died, this is such a silly cliche by that point everyone in the theatre groaned at how cringe-worthy that moment was, Luke is killed after Kylo charges at him and slashes his lightsaber through him similar to something you’d see in a samurai or ninja flick when it’s revealed he was still on the island but his Jedi Hologram was struck which also fatally wou
nded him, Luke then stares at the sun before vanishing while binary sunset plays in the background making this scene slightly emotional.
-Captain Phasma’s return, one of the most anticipated characters in the Force Awakens, Captain Phasma was this trilogies Boba Fett, both looked cool, did nothing and died in a lame way.
Overall while this film is a step above “The Phantom Menace” & “Attack of the Clones” that really isn’t saying much.
Overall Rating: 1.5/5
